Police car hits man in wheelchair, Charlottesville, Virginia: Man Ticketed After Being Struck by Cruiser: Well-known local artist and AIDS survivor Gerry Mitchell was knocked out of his wheelchair by a police cruiser earlier this month, and then received a ticket for jaywalking (rolling?). Courteney Stuart explains in this weeks Hook that Mitchell was returning home from a shopping trip to Reids when he stopped to wait to cross West Main at 4th. When the light turned green, he progressed across the street. Halfway across, a police car hit him from behind, hurling him from his motorized wheelchair and into the street. The apologetic Albemarle County police officer Gregory Davis leapt from his car to help, as did a pedestrian. Bleeding from his limbs, Mitchell consented to be taken to the hospital by ambulance. A city officer came to visit him a few hours later, a ticket in hand. The press only learned about this because a bystander contacted The Hook. Mitchell just wants an apology and, presumably, the ticket to be dropped. Obviously, Officer Davis didnt deliberately run into a man in a wheelchair, but the decision to ticket his victim quite literally added insult to injury. (Attorney Debbie Wyatt speculates that this was deliberate — as with the recent case of the officer nearly running down pedestrians on Water Street, in which he charged two of them with crimes, both of which they were acquitted of.) Given the press attention to that other recent cruiser/pedestrian

www.nydailynews.com An argument between two men in wheelchairs ended in deadly violence early Saturday when one stabbed the other after being gashed on the head, police and witnesses said. A resident of Barrier-Free Living, an assisted-living facility in the East Village, said the killer managed to corner the victim because he was using a motorized wheelchair. The battle started in the early morning hours when a 24-year-old resident smashed a 51-year-old with the footrest of his wheelchair, said resident Norbert Toledo. “There was an argument over nothing,” said Toledo, who is the victim’s roommate. The older man was enraged and some time later zoomed over to his victim – who was using a manually operated wheelchair – and repeatedly stabbed him with a homemade knife. “[He] sped up to him and began stabbing him over and over again,” Toledo, who said he watched the murder with guards on a security monitor. “We couldn’t believe what we were seeing.” The victim was taken to Beth Israel Hospital, where he died. Cops recovered the knife at the scene and arrested the 51-year-old man. Charges were pending. Rafael Espinoza, 64, a friend of the victim, said the facility is dangerous. “[He] was a great guy,” Espinoza said. “I’m in shock that he is gone but I’m not surprised. This is a violent place.”

(WAVY) – The 64-year-old woman who was killed while crossing the street in her motorized wheelchair late Friday evening has been identified by police. The victim, Betty Jean Artis, a resident of Chorey Park Apartments, was crossing West Constance Road alone from the Plaza West Shopping Center in the pedestrian crosswalk when she was hit by a Chevrolet SUV. The last 24 hours have been rough for residents living in Suffolk’s Chorey Apartments. “I didn’t sleep much last night,” said Margaret Sebrell. “I was just thinking about her.” Their neighbor and close friend is no longer around. “I feel as if I had lost a member of my family,” said friend Coley Copeland. They say the hurt they feel is for Betty Jean Artis. “She was a very nice person,” Copeland added. “She never gave anybody a problem and she always said nice things.” Artis was confined to her motorized wheel chair. Friends say at least three times a week she would roll out of her apartment and across Constance Road. She was always heading to Hardees. She did the same Friday night, but never made it home. “Her seat was sitting on the ground and the wheel was sitting in front of the vehicle,” Copeland added talking about the crash. “It was just very sad.” Family says Artis was a former nurse and a mother of one. “I’m going to really miss her,” Sebrell added. 40
