Finding a seller for handicap devices

Edit Article |

]]>

When you are on a tight budget but wish to buy expensive lifting equipments for the handicap, you should always consider the second hand market where there are always people who like to sell their used equipments. As most of the brand new lifting equipments for old people or physically disabled often cost a lot, people may not be so willing to buy them straightaway. This also takes up a significant savings of the lower income people. Even if sometimes, the state government provides subsidies for the purchase of these disabled equipments, most poor people will still not be able to afford it.

If you decide to buy used handicap lift equipments, you can always start searching for them online. Most resellers will have new and used assistive devices for sale. They also offer buy back services for equipments that are still in working conditions, refurbishing them and selling it again in lower end markets. You can find a wide range of used devices being sold including the common electrical stairlifts to the lesser user bath tub lifts. You are advised to conduct a thorough review of the model and type of lifting device before committing to buy them. You also need to know the background of the vendor to see if they have a decent reputation. When buying the used equipments, you must ensure that there are still some years of the warranty left because of the likelihood the equipment may malfunction in the near future.

If you choose an independent seller from websites like craigslist, you need to actually visit the seller and view the stairlift yourself.Try out the lift and ensure that the major components are still functioning. Parts such as batteries, tracks and drive belts are the first few things you should inspect. If you are buying platform lifts, push your electric wheelchair to the platform and see if it still has the power to lift it.

]]>

There are many different types of lift systems for those with mobility issues, that can make traveling much easier. Electric chairs and scooters have made an impact on the ability of those with physical handicaps to travel, but you still must deal with the issues of loading and unloading them. If you choose not to purchase an actual transport van with a built in lift or ramp system, then there are many options to look at. Read on and discover the different types of handicap lift systems for vans.

There is an armlift that is especially designed for those that own power chairs scooters, and they make it easy for the individual to operate by themselves. This lift involves no type of hydraulics and it is all electric. When installed, it does not block any of the doors or windows in the van. Parking will also be easier, because there will be no ramp to fold out before unloading the chair. This lift will fit standard vans, and its weight capacity is six hundred pounds.

There are different sizes and styles of interior power chair lifts to choose from. These lifts can lift your chair or scooter into the back of not only a van, but also and SUV. These are automatic lifts and vary in size based on the type of chair you are purchasing one for. Some are made so that you do not have to remove and seats from your vehicle.

One of the more interesting lifts stores under the vehicle until it is in use. This saves much needed space inside the vehicle when traveling. This model too has that advantage of not blocking any doors or windows when not in use. This type is electric and made to operate from the side door of the van.

As you can see, there are many possibilities when it comes to choosing a lift, and you will have no shortage of sites to shop. There are many different brands and they come in different price ranges based on size. Technology has made it possible for us to have a lift available for every type of chair.

Activities of Daily Living For Elderly and Handicap | Home Accessibility

Every human being that exists on planet Earth must engage in specific daily duties. From working to recreational activities, it is quite obvious that humanity has a need to be very busy. Personal obligations must be executed. Sometimes they are as simple like brushing your teeth or taking a bath and sometimes they are difficult . These actions that must be carried out on a daily basis are typically referred to as “Activities of Daily Living ” or simply ADLs.

Unfortunately, there are millions of people that cannot function with the simplest of tasks because of an elderly age or some type of disablement. The performance of personal hygiene, occupational responsibilities, recreational activities, etc. is curtailed as a result of these impairments. ADLs is a reoccurring term used in healthcare circles to refer to daily self-care activities within an individual’s place of residence, in outdoor environments, or both. The inability to perform ADLs is sadly all too common for millions of people worldwide. This lack of functional status of the individual necessitates some sort of assistance and without it depression can set deep within the psyche of the individual. Depression can cause devastating results. People can lose the will to live because of this debilitating emotional disposition.

ADLs are typically categorized within two compartments:

1. Basic ADLs – Includes eating, dressing, getting into or out of a bed or chair, taking a bath or shower, and using the toilet. In essence, Basic ADLs have to do with the fundamental necessities of life.

2. Instrumental ADLs- Activities related to independent living and include the ability to use the telephone, get to places beyond walking distance, go shopping, prepare meals, do housework, do laundry, take medicine, and handle money. In summation, Instrumental ADLs deal in particular with actions that are not necessarily required for the “essentials” of existence.

As one ages impairment reaches greater levels as they are illustrated in a rising disability over time for those in their 60s and for those in their 70s. Activities of daily living (ADLs) are “the things we normally do” in daily living including any daily activity we perform for self-care (such as feeding ourselves, bathing, dressing, grooming), work, homemaking, and leisure.

This impairment is not relegated strictly to geriatric individuals but as well to those who have been injured in some type of accident or individuals who were born with genetic abnormalities.

Because there are millions of people that are in dire need of some sort of assistance to carry out ADLs there must be something to help them. Mobility aids are specific devices that can ensure that the elderly and the disabled can carry out their daily activities with dignity. Mobility aids include but are not limited to the following:

Walking Aids- includes assisted canes, crutches, and walkers. These devices improve stability by providing additional points of contact as the individual endeavors to traverse horizontally. Additionally, they help to reduce lower limb loading and assist in generating movement.

Wheelchairs and Scooters -These vehicle type instruments substitute for walking by providing a wheeled device on which the user sits. Wheelchairs may be either manually propelled (by the user or by an aide) or electrically powered. Mobility scooters are electrically powered.

Stairlifts – A stairlift is a mechanical device for lifting people and wheelchairs up and down stairs. Sometimes special purpose lifts are provided elsewhere to facilitate access for the disabled.

Bath lifts – They are designed to help people get in and out of the bathtub safely. They gently lower the body into the tub and after the person enjoys a relaxing bath, they gently raise them to the top. There are so many types of bath lifts in the market, that it is a difficult choice for the buyer. However, it certainly helps knowing what is available, helping one decide what they want. Different ones cater to different needs.

As long as mankind lives, he or she must engage in some sort of activity. This is vital for survival. From the mundane to the complex, existence requires many types of actions to be carried out in a functional capacity. This is what “Activities of Daily Living” (ADLs) are defined as. It is unfortunate that multitudes of individuals that exist on planet Earth cannot execute these activities in particular. Fortunately, mankind has developed these wonderful mobility aids to assist these individuals in their time of consternation and depression. Happiness, contentment, and self-esteem can once again be restored to the elderly and the disabled.

What is the right handicap lift to use

Edit Article |

If you are concerned with your family members who have problems or need assistance with their mobility when they are at home, then you should consider installing some of the handicap lifting equipments at home to help them with these everyday activities. In fact, more and more homes are buying these equipments to make their house disable-friendly. In some public buildings, it is compulsory to to install the disabled lifting devices to make the building accessible to the old and disabled.

You can select from a wide range of equipments for the disabled and all of them will serve only a specific purpose.A stairlift specifically helps the user to climb a stairs which they otherwise need caregivers to carry them. The old people have conditions such as arthritis and joint problems and they cannot bend their knees to climb the stairs. The stair lift system is a very flexible and customizable device based on user requirements. If the elderly cannot sit, they can opt for the standing or perch models which do not require them to be in sitting position. They will feel more comfortable in a half standing posture with a safety handle for them to hold on.

As most of the old people face problems getting off their bed and to the wheelchairs, there is the ceiling lift which is basically a mini crane like device hanging from the wall that lifts the user from the bed to their mobility device. The user is cushioned in a canvas hung to the crane on four corners. To use this device, an assistant is required to be present to give a helping hand. The assistant will let the user rest on one side while sliding the canvas underneath, then let the user rest in the middle of the canvas. After that, the assistant will pump the hydraulic lift to carry the user up. When the user is in mid air, he will be pushed along the ceiling track to his electric wheelchair and slowly lowered into position.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/What You Should Know When Searching For Handicap Vans

Handicap vans are very important for the mobility of the disabled because the range of a wheelchair is limited. When you need to visit friends or go on a long journey, even a road trip, you will need the versatility of handicap vans. They just give you much more freedom.

When looking for a van to buy, it is important that you should at least know what handicap vans can offer you and how they are so built to have the features you need. Common these days are minivans. They are newer than regular vans and are smaller. If you need the luggage space, you definitely should go for a regular full size van which have more space, larger fuel tank and can go farther. However, if you desire a compact vehicle that is easy to handle and look less conspicuous, then you should be looking at minivans.

Handicap vans are conversion vans. This means that they are refitted with ramps, their floors are lowered and their frames may be recut so that wheelchairs can climb into them and be transported safely. Therefore, by design there are two kinds of handicap vans: the rear entry configuration and the side entry one.

Side entry handicap vans have their frames recut. During this cutting, the air conditioning and heater lines will need to be cut and redone when putting back the van. Here, the floor of the van is replaced with a stronger and lower one. A safety system will also be installed to anchor your wheelchair. Entering a side entry van, therefore, involves the ramp folding out in a gentle incline for you to wheel in.

With rear entry vans, the frames are not cut. However, the floors are also lowered and here, the fuel tanks relocated. The relocation of the fuel tanks necessitates conducting third-party highway crash tests to ascertain the safety of rear entry vans. This is a report you should ask for if you intend to buy one. Also, because they have a higher ground clearance, these vans are preferred when travelling in mountainous regions or through snows.  In addition, rear entry vans can use regular parking spaces since you come aboard and get off through the back.

Whichever of the handicap vans you choose will provide you convenience, safety and freedom to get on the road and go. Your preference and special needs should also be met by the one you buy.
