Handicap vans are very important for the mobility of the disabled because the range of a wheelchair is limited. When you need to visit friends or go on a long journey, even a road trip, you will need the versatility of handicap vans. They just give you much more freedom.

When looking for a van to buy, it is important that you should at least know what handicap vans can offer you and how they are so built to have the features you need. Common these days are minivans. They are newer than regular vans and are smaller. If you need the luggage space, you definitely should go for a regular full size van which have more space, larger fuel tank and can go farther. However, if you desire a compact vehicle that is easy to handle and look less conspicuous, then you should be looking at minivans.

Handicap vans are conversion vans. This means that they are refitted with ramps, their floors are lowered and their frames may be recut so that wheelchairs can climb into them and be transported safely. Therefore, by design there are two kinds of handicap vans: the rear entry configuration and the side entry one.

Side entry handicap vans have their frames recut. During this cutting, the air conditioning and heater lines will need to be cut and redone when putting back the van. Here, the floor of the van is replaced with a stronger and lower one. A safety system will also be installed to anchor your wheelchair. Entering a side entry van, therefore, involves the ramp folding out in a gentle incline for you to wheel in.

With rear entry vans, the frames are not cut. However, the floors are also lowered and here, the fuel tanks relocated. The relocation of the fuel tanks necessitates conducting third-party highway crash tests to ascertain the safety of rear entry vans. This is a report you should ask for if you intend to buy one. Also, because they have a higher ground clearance, these vans are preferred when travelling in mountainous regions or through snows.  In addition, rear entry vans can use regular parking spaces since you come aboard and get off through the back.

Whichever of the handicap vans you choose will provide you convenience, safety and freedom to get on the road and go. Your preference and special needs should also be met by the one you buy.

What You Should Know Before Purchasing Powered Wheelchairs.

Posted: September 25th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Models and Reviews | Tags: , , , , , | No Comments »

People are involved in many activities everyday. Healthy people’s body is functioning well and is able to perform and carry on the tasks quickly and easily without any limits. They can freely move and suddenly change to any direction they want.

Those people with disability can never perform their life’s activities freely since disability can either be in the form of mental or physical illness. They need assistance in order for them to successfully finish their life’s basic needs and their disability can either be permanent or temporary.

There is no problem regarding caring for the disabled since there are many kinds of care where in it will help both the patient and the care giver to lessen the burdens on their daily routines. Some equipments, devices, medical products and supplies are recommended by doctors to help the patients in their recovery. The wheelchair is the famous device aiding patients with disability.

A powered wheelchair is powered specifically by batteries, motor or electricity and is more accessible in terms of usage compared from a manual wheelchair.

Wheelchair is considered a medical aiding device. The use of it needs a thorough evaluation on the doctor’s medical diagnosis and the patient’s ailments. Wheelchair should fit the patient’s physique and doctor’s recommendation. It is not advisable for reuse and not for resale.

These are the disadvantages of a used power wheelchair:

- The time span spent for using the power wheelchair may already affect its physical make up that may cause maintenance problems.

- It might not be compatible to the new user because of different medical diagnosis and symptoms of ailments.

- Used powered wheelchair has no guaranteed warranty because warranty is not transferable to the next user.

- The mobility of the powered wheelchair may also be affected.

- Poor physical condition due to poor maintenance of the previous users.

It is necessary that you must be able to know the specific good and bad qualities or signs before purchasing a used power wheelchair.

- You must know its physical condition especially if you are purchasing online. Careful viewing of all its corners and battery box is needed. It is not properly maintained if you observe some signs of corrosion.

What to Know about Folding Power Wheelchairs

Posted: July 31st, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Models and Reviews | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

Similar to the traditional wheelchairs a folding power wheelchair also known as electric wheelchair is powered by two standard U-1 batteries. Like the travel power wheelchairs, foldable chairs can be transported easily but when compared to travel power chairs it requires more effort to disassemble. One of the best features about a foldable power wheelchair is that it folds just like a manual chair. This makes it perfect for storage and transportability. This type of power wheelchair is easily disconnected to fit into a car or SUV. The heaviest piece on this chair weighs approximately 45lbs. A folding power chair can be easily disassembled in three easy steps: 1. Unplug two battery cables 2. Remove the battery case 3. Fold the X shaped frame of the power wheelchair.

Most foldable power wheelchairs are rear wheel drive and have an estimated speed of up 5mph. It is ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. Like the standard and heavy-duty electric wheelchairs, folding power chairs are perfect for rough terrain and takes up less storage space in your home. In addition, they are designed with a sling seating system that accommodates pressure reducing wheel chair cushions from ROHO to Jay. It also offers swing away legrest that makes transfer in and out of the chair easy.

Furthermore, folding power wheelchairs is designed for those who seek the look and feel of a traditional wheelchair but lacks the upper and lower extremity strength required to propel a conventional wheelchair. There are several reasons why people prefer foldable electric chairs to standard or travel wheelchairs and they include:

Easy to transport Takes up less storage space Longer battery range Increased speed capabilities Perfect for indoor and outdoor use Seating system accepts cushions Flip up armrest Swing away or elevating leg rest

What to know about Standard Power Wheelchair

Posted: July 27th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Models and Reviews | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

Standard power wheelchairs are one of the most purchased types of electric wheelchairs and consist of center wheel and rear wheel drive. It is one of the most maneuverable types of power wheelchair on the market and can accommodate items such as elevating legrest and power elevating seat.

Standard power wheelchairs are perfect for indoor and outdoor use and handles rough terrain very well. A center drive standard wheelchair are designed to maneuver well in confined spaces and requires less space to maneuver when compared to rear wheel drive or foldable power wheelchairs. Its standard captain and high back seat with headrest provides a comfortable ride for the end user. The captain seat available with most power wheelchairs also features a semi-reclining back and a headrest for extra comfort. Now the most important question asked by consumers is “what is a captain’s seat”. A captain’s seat is very much similar to seats found in automobiles.

This type of electric wheelchair (rear and center drivel) features flip up armrest, a weight capacity of up to 300lbs, a speed and battery range of up to 7mph and 15miles, respectively. When reaching counter tops is a primary concern, a standard rear or center drive power wheelchair with power elevating seat is an option. A power elevating seat comes standard on some power chairs but is optional on others.

When compared to travel and folding power wheelchairs, a standard power wheelchair is heavy and requires a power chair or scooter lift into a car or SUV. However, two people can easily disassemble this wheelchair for transporting. This is simply achieved by separating the seat from the base.

What to Know about Travel Power Wheelchairs

Posted: July 15th, 2010 | Author: | Filed under: Models and Reviews | Tags: , , , , | No Comments »

A travel power wheelchair is one of the most compact electric wheelchairs available. It is often designed for petite individuals that weigh up to 250lbs. While standard powered chairs offer maneuverability in tight spaces, travel motorized chairs are simply designed for that purpose.

Accordingly, travel power chairs is the best type of power wheelchair to consider when transporting and maneuverability in confined spaces are you major concern. Its compact frame and size makes this type of wheelchair such as the Merits EZ Go a better alternative to scooters and high end chairs. When compared to regular standard and heavy duty wheelchairs, travel power wheelchairs have smaller batteries that weigh less than the regular U-1 batteries required on standard power chairs. This battery makes it easy to transport in a car or SUV. Travel powers are easily broken down into 3 pieces for easy transport.  It breaks down into the seat; the base and the battery pack (the battery pack houses tow lightweight batteries). The heaviest piece on most travel wheelchairs equals 34.5lbs.

Unlike the standard power chairs that comes with captains seat, travel power wheelchairs comes smaller seat and flip up armrest that makes transfer from the wheelchair onto a different surface easy. In addition, the travel power wheelchairs have minimal battery range when compared to the standard power chairs. Travel power wheelchairs have battery travel range of up to 12 miles and as such travel power chairs are not designed for long distance traveling or riding on bumpy terrain.

There is no doubt that this type of chair is one of the most affordable type of electric wheelchair</a> on the market. As a result of this consumers often ask whether it is right for them.

If one or more of the following applies to you then a travel power chair could be right for you:

You have a very small apartment and are concerned about space. You are a petite or weigh less than 250lbs. You are concerned about the ease associated with transporting a power chair You will be using it mostly indoors. Can also be used outdoor. You are looking for a wheelchair that can maneuver in small and tight corners.

On the other hand, a travel power chair may not be appropriate for you if:

You weigh more than 250lbs. You need to ride on bumpy terrain. You need a much larger captains seat available on most standard wheelchairs You need your seat to have a headrest. You plan on riding long distance.
